How To Transition Your Wardrobe From Summer To Fall

Autumn is here, and it’s time to transition our wardrobes from summer to fall! After a major closet purge this month, I’m diving into fall staples with excitement. Researching trends, elevating my style, and embracing my favorite fashion season has been a true joy. In this guide, I’ll share tips on how to declutter your closet, highlight trends to look out for, offer advice on investing in key pieces, and share some of my recent purchases. Let’s get started!

PURGE

As I mentioned, I tackled a huge purge this month, saying goodbye to a lot of summer items. We are moving soon, and I DID NOT want to bring all those clothes with me, lol! Deciding what to keep or toss can be tough, but my rule is simple: if I hadn’t worn it in the past two months, it was time to let it go! Basics were a particular challenge; I had accumulated dozens of solid tees and tanks over the years. I decided to keep just one or two basics in each color, making room for new pieces this season!

RESEARCH

Speaking of new pieces this season, let’s dive into the trends I’m excited about, as well as what’s “in” and what’s “out!”

Less Cardigans: Other layering options are taking the spotlight like blazers and long coats.

Long Coats: Perfect for layering and adding sophistication to any outfit.

More Layers: Think cozy and stylish with multiple layers. You will see lots of layers this fall!

Adidas Sambas: These versatile sneakers continue to make a big statement.

Pops of Dark Red and Green: These rich hues are set to be the standout color accents this season.

Celine’s Rising Popularity: Expect to see more of their designer bags and accessories.

Polo “Bears” Everywhere: A timeless “fall” brand that’s gaining more traction for their “bear” designs.

Elevated Everyday Looks: Simple yet high-fashion outfits are in.

Leopard Print Returns: British Vogue says it’s back!

Minimal Prints and Patterns: Understated pieces are trending. More statement accessories.

Big Knit Scarves: Essential for both warmth and style.

Beanie’s Are Out: I think we will be seeing more hats this year, rather than beanies!

INVEST

Investing in clothes can definitely feel daunting – and it can be expensive – which is why strategic planning is key. First, find inspiration! Pinterest is my go-to for seasonal style inspiration and outfit ideas. I love creating collages and putting together outfits online first before buying anything. Here’s a little style board I put together of outfit inspiration for this autumn!

Once you’ve gathered your inspiration, it’s time to shop! Start by focusing on basics and transitional pieces, which are essential for building a versatile wardrobe. Think quality jeans, versatile tops and bodysuits, cozy sweaters, and staple dresses. These items will form the foundation of your fall wardrobe and can be layered as the weather shifts.

After stocking up on these essentials, you can have fun with accessories, jackets, bags, shoes, and jewelry. This is where you can experiment with bold colors, patterns, and standout pieces to add personality and flair to your outfits.

Are you selling anything you purged online using a platform like Poshmark? Or did you give it all away to Pinwheels?

I love Celine and have a few bags… I’m tempted by the baseball cap but torn… $590… am I buying it for the logo? I’m still devoted to my belt bags and I nano luggage totes.

  3. I have the A&F tweed mini dress on my mind for fall, as well! It’s sooo pretty. I need to do another clothing purge too, as well. It’s good to refresh your closet after a while.

Wow. Nice job on purging old summer items that you won’t we wearing and the fall research on new fashion trends. You are ready for fall- Your favorite season. Leporid for fall was always in style for me. Bear print clothes is a go too. Boyfriend will love that one me. I tucked him in last night with his little bear. He did that to me the other night. Still too warm here to think of fall yet but it will be here soon. My needs is to increase my fall/winter wardrobe. Had a great birthday weekend. Listened to live music and partied all weekend. Had 2 pool parties and had plenty of bikini time. Hope you had fun in Ocean Isle with family. Outfit for office today- Little white summer dress with blue high heel sandals. Gotta to break the no white rule after Labor day. Love your long sleeve white dress with those tall boots.

I love the advice you share with us here. I think one of the hardest things I have to do each year is transition my wardrobe from such hot weather to the cooler months. While it is exciting it is also something that hits us like a freight train and I don’t think I can ever prepare in advance for it. This really helped me feel seen and heard, but is also motivating me to start consider how I want to transition and which things I want to keep and what I want to clean out also!
